Advanced Network & Services, a non-profit US corporation promoting and facilitating the use of technology in education, announced today the appointment of MultiNET Ltd. as its National Partner for operations of ThinkQuest in Romania. MultiNET Ltd. , based in Baia Mare, is similarly dedicated to advancing education in Romania through creative and disciplined the use of technology. MultiNET Ltd. will be the sole organization in Romania for the operations of ThinkQuest .
ThinkQuest is the pioneering competition aimed at integrating technology in education. More than 20,000 students and teachers have participated in ThinkQuest since 1996, resulting in more than 1,000 educational and interactive Web sites created by students from 67 countries. ThinkQuest is the Internet-based learning initiative with a truly international scope.
ThinkQuest teams consist of two to three students, 12 to 19 years of age, from purposely dissimilar backgrounds as far as access to technology and expertise, geographic location, and ethnicity and culture. Winners have received more than $1 million each year in cash and college scholarships since the program's inception. Top prize in 1999 is $25,000 per student, $5,000 per coach, and $2,000 per school. Several other prizes are offered in various fields of knowledge and inquiry.
Students, teachers, educational and technological institutions throughout the world are encouraged to participate in ThinkQuest. The formation of student teams is the first step in the process. Organizations in more than 30 countries serve as National Partners with Advanced Network in encouraging and helping students and their coaches to take part in this international program.

Logging more than 1,000,000 hits each day, ThinkQuest entries range from a sophisticated, real-time stock market simulation to an in-depth guide to C++ and from a behind-the-scene look at the motion picture industry to a provocative exploration of the mysteries of space. "ThinkQuest is helping to ensure that students have the resources and support, and develop the experience and understanding, to be equal participants in the digital future," said Allan H. Weis, president and chief executive officer of Advanced Networks & Services and ThinkQuest's founder. "Our goal is to embrace the strong interest of students around the world and to give their teachers a structure for integrating computers in the classroom."
ThinkQuest is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1997 DigiGlobe Award for Education and Science from Deutsche Telekom AG and Germany's Focus Magazine, the 1997 Thomas Edison Award for Education in the New Millennium and, in April, the prestigious Global Information Infrastructure Award for Education. In addition, ThinkQuest has received support from technology giants Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, and Netscape.
ThinkQuest programs also include teacher workshops and ThinkQuest Jr., which encourages and assists fourth through sixth-grade students in creating imaginative content for the World Wide Web. Limited for the time being to the United States, ThinkQuest Jr. gave out more than $500,000 to students and teachers this year.
